Philosophy
Great things sometimes happen by chance. In 1999, during our first planting on Old Mission Peninsula, an unknown mix of grape varieties inadvertently ended up in Jamieson Vineyard around Row 7. It was a hot and frantic weekend of planting, and the Laginas called in friends and family for help. Plants were grabbed haphazardly and mistakes were made in an effort to save the vines from baking in the sun or over soaking in buckets of water. Rather than correct our mistake, we decided to declare victory, welcoming our first vintage of this flagship wine in 2006. Row 7’s eponymous wine is a field blend of those same varieties, a mysterious red that delivers bold vintages year after year.
Flavor Notes
Brambleberry flavors brighten lifted aromas of baking spice and brown sugar. Firm barrel tannins balance fresh Northern Michigan acidity to a silky finish.
Vinification
The Row 7 hoop house was harvested on October 26th, 2020 from our southernmost vineyard, Jamieson, at peak ripeness. After arrival at the winery, the grapes were fermented in a stainless steel red wine tank with daily pump-overs until November 25th when they were pressed into three-year-old extra tight grain French oak demi-muid and barrique barrels. Undergoing malolactic fermentation, the wine aged for two years and nine months before the barrels were blended and bottled on August 8th, 2023.
Pairings
This vintage is perfect for meats such as filet mignon or braised lamb that can stand up to the wine's intensity. Roasted potatoes with onions and rosemary or grilled portobello mushrooms make great umami inspired sides.
Cellaring
We recommend enjoying through 2026.
