The Caverns

Creating the perfect environment

With the completion of our winery and tasting room, Mari Vineyards achieved the status of becoming the first northern Michigan winery with an extensive underground barrel aging area. Winemaking relies on constant temperatures and high humidity, especially during the aging process.

At a depth of at least 10 feet below ground, our caverns will naturally provide temperatures consistently between 55 and 60°F and a humidity over 70%, both of which are considered ideal for winemaking - all without the need for any air conditioning. All of this means we’ll be able to continue to produce the best possible wines while reducing our carbon footprint.
