2017 Merlot

2017 Merlot

Varietals: 95% Merlot,  5% Refosco

Vineyard: Merlot → 50% Jamieson, 20% Grishaw, 15% Irish,  5% Refosco → Irish Hoop Houses

ABV: 13.5%

Flavor Notes: Akin to many of our reds (and the cooler regions of northern Italy), our Merlot features a beautiful ripe cherry nose complemented by notes of amaretto. Supporting oak flavor and supple mid-palate tannins carry through to the finish where there is some final grit and grip provided by the Refosco. Winemaker Sean O’Keefe notes that Merlot has been underappreciated since the film Sideways negatively portrayed the grape in favor of Pinot Noir, and that Merlot grown in a truly cool climate like Northern Michigan is special and something to be proud of.

Pairings: Merlot pairs well with steak, roasted meat, or vegetables with rosemary and thyme. Also consider an Italian direction with meat-based pasta dishes or fennel sausage red pizzas.

Vinification: The Merlot was harvested between October 28th and November 1st 2017. The Jamieson and Grishaw Vineyard Merlot was pressed on November 28th after fermenting in stainless pumpover tanks for one month on their skins. The Refosco was picked on the November 7th, and pressed on the 22nd after undergoing hand punch downs in stainless open-top tanks.  After pressing, the Merlot was transferred to older oak demi-muids and barriques, while the Refosco was in a neutral demi-muid. The wine spent eleven months aging on its gross lees before the two varietals were blended together and bottled September 4th, 2019.

Suggested Cellaring: This Merlot will be at its peak now through 2025, but could age up to 12 years.

We love this wine both myself and my daughter. Usually when I sniff a wine first I am offended by the bouquet but this wine is delightful.
