2017 Troglodyte Rosso

2017 Troglodyte Rosso

Vintage: 2017

Varietals: 50% Pinot Noir, 40% Teroldego, 10% Merlot

Vineyard: Pinot Noir: Bella Vista and Grishaw, Teroldego: Neeson (1st crop), Merlot: Grishaw

Flavor Notes: Ripe and rich black cherry flavors, dark gritty tannins, and mouthwatering acidity from the Teroldego play off of the softer bramble berry Pinot Noir and herbal Merlot, making this a great wine for any occasion. Sean believes in balance through blending; this is not just discards of wine thrown together. This philosophy is a driving force behind the Troglodyte wines, and these grapes were perfectly suited to pair up for this blend. The individual varietals forgo the spotlight in favor of a seamless blending of textures and flavors. For a long time, winemakers ran away from acidity while chasing big bordeauxs, but in this case the acidity from the Teroldego adds a refreshing feel. The tannins appear here as present but never overpowering. While this is not an obviously oaked wine, light oak does show subtly on the finish.

Suggested Pairings: This would be a perfect wine to pair with a Mari charcuterie board! Think Italian meats and hard crystalized cheeses like parmesan or pecorino romano. Very versatile, but also great as a wine to be enjoyed on its own.

  • Fermentation: The pinot noir was fermented in the stainless red wine fermenters, and kept in stainless for blending with barrel-aged teroldego and merlot towards the end.

  • Aging: the teroldego and merlot were aged in a variety of lightly oaked barrels. This light oaking shows on the finish

Cellaring Recommendations: Due to the screw cap on the bottle and the gritty tannins, this wine will age for 6-8 years, but is certainly ready to be enjoyed now. Drink now through 2026
