Troglodyte is a term chosen by our owner, Marty Lagina, that means “cave dweller” - appropriate for how our winemaking team dwell in the Mari wine caves. It was a term of derision back in the day, but we’re bringing it back with a more positive vibe. The Troglodyte line features wines sourced from our various vineyards with an intent on balanced blending.

Vinification: Winemaker Sean O’Keefe planned on the 2018 Pinot Gris as the base for the Rosato, harvesting from our Bella Vista Vineyard when the fruit was ready. The Gris was fermented traditionally, but then aged in a 2500L Döppelstück for one year—similar to how our amber wine, Bestiary Ramato, is created. He later experimented with blending in 2019 Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, and Riesling until the perfect balance was achieved. It is considered a hybridization between the two rosato techniques—either basing the wine around one varietal or blending red and white together. As a mutation of Pinot Noir, the Pinot Gris plays off of the two red grapes well, harmonizing the blend with a note of brightness from the additional Riesling.

Tasting Notes
The Pinot Gris makes up the majority of the blend, balanced by rounded hints of oak from barrel aging in a German Döppelstück for an extra year. The interplay of Pinot Noir and Gamay Noir colors the Rosato with flavorful depth while Riesling adds characteristic acid and a light tartness. This is a fun, fruity, and quenching wine perfect for a hot summer day, reminiscent of strawberry and watermelon Jolly Ranchers.
