Varietals: 100% Gewüztraminer

Vineyard: Mostly McKian with a small amount from the Walker Vineyard 

 

Flavor Notes: Lychee, juniper, and citrus peel, with distinct vanilla notes from the oak stück it was fermented in. With time, the Mari Vineyards Gewüztraminer will develop more of a pungent rose/floral nose.

 

Sommelier Paul Brady notes, “While acidity in Gewurztraminer is typically moderate, it makes up for it with an extra bit of tannin compared to most white wines (Gewurztraminer is a pink-skinned grape), as is present in the Mari example, which is dry and minerally intense, and that tannin is nicely complemented by the juicy brisket.”

 

Suggested Pairings: This Gewüztraminer is a fantastically food friendly wine! Pairing will bring out different flavors and aspects of this wine. Winemaker Sean O'Keefe highlights three pairing ideas:

  1. Spicier Asian, Indian, or Middle Eastern foods will bring out the spicy side of this wine. Think ginger, ginseng, allspice, and coriander. The wine can stand up to the spice in a unique way!

  2. Consider this the bass in a rhythm section; it has body and presence without grabbing all of the attention. Able to stand up to bacon, scallops, pork, duck, brisket, fennel sausage or salami.

  3. Floral notes in the wine can be emphasized by light citrus and herb food pairings; think lemongrass, or lime marinades.

Processing:

  • Skins were soaked overnight for 12 hours then fermented in a 1200L stück for nine months on gross lees
