2017 Grüner Veltliner

2017 Grüner Veltliner

Philosophy: Winemaker Sean O’Keefe was the first person to plant Grüner Veltliner in Northern Michigan at his family’s winery, Chateau Grand Traverse. Since then many wineries have adopted the variety and its presence has blossomed in our area.

Vinification: The Grüner grapes were picked from our Grishaw Vineyard on October 26th, 2017. Half of the grapes were fermented in a 1200 German Stück while the other half went into stainless steel drums. After fermentation both vessels of wine stayed separately on the lees until March 19, 2018 when it was racked and blended together into a stainless steel tank for settling. After five months, the wine was bottled on August 27th.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Grüner Veltliner is a unique grape judged on its delicate herbal flavors rather than primary fruity characteristics. This vintage features notes of white pepper, celery seed, and lemon zest. A creamy mouthfeel imparted from lees aging meets slight astringency from the grape skins, creating an interesting texture.
Food Pairing Notes
Grüner is native to Austria and is its most widely planted variety. Here lies a geographic crossroads of culinary influence providing many central and eastern European pairing options. Think lentils, hummus, tabouli, goulash, and baba ganoush as well.
