2016 Scriptorium Riesling

2016 Scriptorium Riesling

Varietals: 100% Riesling

Vineyard: Mostly Grishaw Vineyard, some Jamieson Vineyard  and Irish Vineyard

RS: 14.5g/L    Harvest Brix: 22°    TA: 8.1 g/L    pH: 2.97    ABV: 12.0%

Flavor Notes: Think grapes, grapefruit, and a little peach. This Riesling is off-dry, or the German equivalent halb-trocken. A crowd pleaser wine — not obviously sweet, but also not too dry; a great summer wine.

John Haeger (Riesling Rediscovered): “A full-flavored cocktail of citrus, melon, peach pit and apple; bright and lively across the palate; lightly grippy on the finish; good acid and just 12°.  Very slightly off-dry, delicious and food friendly. Feels Alsatian, but with less alcohol. Worked very well with ponzu roasted chicken”.

Pairings: Barbeque dishes with sweet and tangy sauce. Brisket, pulled pork or chicken.

Vinification: The fruit was fermented in stainless tanks with some light lees contact. The Grishaw Vineyard grapes were kept together, and their tank retained some sugar to nudge the wine into an off-dry. Grishaw’s heavier soil lent a softer, less acidic, mouthfeel and fruitier flavor.

Suggested Cellaring: Ideal through 2022, will evolve in flavor as it ages. Will taste drier beginning 2024.

Scriptorium: Prior to the printing press, books and manuscripts were copied by hand. Much of the world’s great written works were destroyed throughout history, but some survived in the monasteries, where monks would both copy manuscripts and tend to grapes. This monastic movement gave the wine industry the knowledge we have today.

Winemaker Sean O’Keefe jokes that he’s filling the “second son” role. In ye olden days, the first son would often become a knight. The second son often went to a monastery.
