Bel Tramonto translates to beautiful sunset in Italian, representing the marriage of bright red Sangiovese against the darker hued Merlot.
Philosophy: There was once a time when the idea of growing Sangiovese on Old Mission Peninsula seemed outlandish. The 2018 Bel Tramonto is a testament to the determination and imagination required to make this idea a reality, featuring our largest percentage of Sangiovese in the blend to date. Inspired by the Chianti wines of Italy, Bel Tramonto blends star Sangiovese with supporting Merlot to achieve an elegant balance representative of both our Italian heritage and of our home in Northern Michigan.
Vinification: Both the Sangiovese and Merlot were grown and hand harvested from our northernmost vineyard, Irish, underneath our Nellaserra hoop houses. The Merlot was picked on October 23rd, 2018 and the Sangiovese following on October 27th. The grapes were fermented separately in open top bins with daily punch downs by hand for two weeks. After pressing, the wine was blended into second use 600L demi muids where it remained intact on the lees for one year and nine months. On August 11th, 2020 the wine was racked and lightly filtered before bottling occurred on September 15th, 2020.
