2018 Late Harvest Riesling

2018 Late Harvest Riesling

Late Harvest translates to Spätlese, which is German for “a special selection of the ripest grapes of the harvest”. In the United States, these wines are usually very sweet, but here at Mari we seek balance. Although it is a lush wine with obvious sweetness, it is drier than most. “Balance is everything” - Sean O’Keefe

Birdcage Series: The bird on the bottle is a symbol of Sean’s journey as Mari’s winemaker. This bird is a magpie with a grape in its mouth, flying from a gilded birdcage, ready to stretch its creative wings.

Vinification: The grapes were picked at peak ripeness, fermented in stainless steel tanks, and stopped at a cold temperature to preserve residual sugar. “Late Harvest” is a legally protected term. Under law, no sugar can be added to increase sweetness or alcohol. It is a delicate balancing act of preserving underlying acid structure with the lush fruit.

Riesling ages well, but does change in character with maturity. A patina effect can create new flavors that some describe as “petrol”. We recommend enjoying through 2030.

Tasting Notes
Citrus leaning aromas with flavors ranging from a very ripe apple to tangerine and apricot. Floral notes are supported by a mouth-coating texture from lees contact—an aspect Winemaker Sean O’Keefe enjoys. Our Late Harvest is less obviously sweet than others, containing roughly half of the residual sugar compared to the regional style and allowing for better balance.
Food Pairing Notes
Rieslings go well with anything pork, like spicy cajun food, or sweet and sour Asian dishes. Consider enjoying this after dinner as a dessert by itself!

I tasted the late harvest Riesling at the tasting room (which is gorgeous!) and absolutely loved it. My boyfriend and I had to buy a bottle which we thoroughly enjoyed once we got back home to southeast MI. It was very smooth, crisp and not overly sweet as some late harvests tend to be. Lovely wine!

after doing a little research watching curse of oak island it led me to find this winery. Normally I am strick about spending more than 20 for a bottle that I have not tasted. However with the recommendations of the staff I took the gamble and had them ship me a bottle. So glad that I did. It was delicious. Can't wait to get more.
