2018 Late Harvest Riesling

Flavor Notes: Citrus leaning aromas with flavors ranging from a very ripe apple to tangerine and apricot. Floral notes are supported by a mouth-coating texture from lees contact—an aspect Winemaker Sean O’Keefe enjoys. Our Late Harvest is less obviously sweet than others, containing roughly half of the residual sugar compared to the regional style and allowing for better balance. 

Pairings: Rieslings go well with anything pork: spicy cajun food, sweet and sour Asian food, etc. Consider enjoying this after dinner as a dessert!

Vinification: The grapes were picked at peak ripeness, fermented in stainless steel tanks, and stopped at a cold temperature to preserve residual sugar. “Late Harvest” is a legally protected term. Under law, no sugar can be added to increase sweetness or alcohol. It is a delicate balancing act of preserving underlying acid structure with the lush fruit.

Suggested Cellaring: Riesling ages well, but does change in character with maturity. A “patina” effect can create new flavors that some describe as “petrol”. We recommend enjoying through 2030.

Late Harvest translates to Spätlese, which is German for “a special selection of the ripest grapes of the harvest”. In the United States, these wines are usually very sweet, but here at Mari we seek balance instead. Although it is a lush wine with obvious sweetness, it is drier than most. “Balance is everything” - Sean O’Keefe

Birdcage: The bird on the bottle is a symbol of Sean’s journey as Mari’s winemaker. It’s about “stretching your creative wings” so to speak. This bird is a magpie with a grape in its mouth, flying from the gilded birdcage.
