Our style continues to evolve at Mari as we seek the right balance of oak fermentation and aging to deliver a wine that truly tastes of our region. 2019 was a cooler year and winemaker Sean O’Keefe decided to shift into a Chablis-inspired direction. Instead of new oak, he chose all second-use barrels and stirred the lees regularly to build structure and mid-palate complexity rather than overpowering the fruit of the wine with the flash of new oak flavor. 

Tasting Notes
Cooler vintage fruit notes include pear, ripe apples, and lemon rind balanced by autolytic flavors with a nutty character due to bâtonnage. While not fat, lush, or overtly oaky, notes of vanilla are present, ending with a clean finish. Allowing the wine to breath will bring forth new flavors as it opens up.

The grapes were harvested on October 18th, 2019 from our Jamieson Vineyard, just south of the winery. After pressing, the juice was fermented in second use French oak barriques and the lees were stirred regularly through the fall into December. The wine aged until July 19th, 2021 when it was transferred to a stainless steel tank for blending. One light filtration and bottling occurred on August 5th.

Food Pairings
The balanced nature of this wine allows it to pair well with a variety of dishes, particularly heavier ones it has the body to match. Late summer and root vegetables like corn, red pepper, and butternut squash compliment well; we recommend tasting with pumpkin or portobello ravioli. Fish, like salmon, are also a great option served with a buttery sauce. Feeling cheesy? Try a gruyere and apple grilled cheese sandwich. For dessert, go with lemon bars.
